Candace Owens “We are legion” comment: What did she mean by that?

Candace Owens has caused a new wave of controversy after describing her supporters as “Legion,” a phrase with an interesting biblical connection that has drawn attention from Christians online.
During a recent broadcast, Owens used the phrase while discussing the size and influence of her audience. A clip of the remark circulated on X, where users debated whether Owens was simply using “legion” in the ordinary sense of a large group or whether the biblical reference carried a deeper meaning.
The controversy centers on the Gospel accounts of Jesus confronting a demonized man. In Mark 5, when Jesus asks the spirit for its name, the response is “Legion,” followed by the explanation that they are many. The same account appears in Luke 8.
That makes Owens’ choice of words particularly odd, and perhaps even ironic, given her claimed Christian identity. There is nothing inherently demonic about the word “legion” in every context of course. The term has long been used to describe a large group or multitude. However, within biblical language, “Legion” is most famously associated with a collection of demons opposing Christ.
Owens could have chosen virtually any other metaphor for describing her audience. Those defending her say the remark was plainly intended to mean that her supporters are numerous and should not be interpreted as a declaration of allegiance to demons.
Whether Owens intended the biblical association or simply used the word to emphasize the size of her following, the choice was odd to be sure. For someone who frequently invokes Christianity, calling her movement “Legion” is, at minimum, a remarkably strange choice of words. Maybe it is nothing. In Candace’s own words, we are just “asking questions”, as she frequently likes to say while making thinly veiled assertions.
