Danville City Councilman Lee Vogler, 38, was seriously injured on July 30 when a man entered his office at Showcase Magazine, doused him with gasoline, and set him on fire.
The attack occurred around 11:30 a.m., and witnesses reported the assailant chased Vogler outside before igniting him.
The suspect, 29‑year‑old Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, was arrested nearby and charged with attempted first‑degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding. He is being held without bond. Authorities confirmed the motive was personal and not connected to Vogler’s role in public office.
Vogler was airlifted to a burn center in North Carolina. Officials said he was conscious and able to speak after the assault, though his full condition has not been disclosed.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and Danville Mayor Alonzo Jones expressed shock and called for prayers.
