President Donald Trump will deliver a speech on Friday at The Villages, a master-planned retirement community in Central Florida, and the residents are excited to hear him speak.
Hours before the event was slated to begin, long lines of largely retirement-aged Floridians lined the sidewalks of the community, sitting in lawn chairs and decked out in red, white, and blue clothes as they waited for the venue to open its doors:
Local youngsters were also expected to attend the speech.
“It’s been pretty cool,” Villages High School student James Calabrese told WESH 2 on Friday. “Not everyone gets to experience having the President of the United States come to your school.”
Footage shared by journalist Brian Glenn showed happy campers blasting “YMCA” while waiting in line – arguably one of the president’s favorite rally songs, played often during his many years of political campaigning.
“Thousands of people are in line right now,” said Fox News’ Darren Botehlo. “…This is like the Coachella of Central Florida.”
The president’s speech at The Villages is friendly territory for Republicans. The area is well-known as a GOP stronghold. The speech is expected to center on President Trump’s economic agenda in 2026 as the nation looks toward the midterm elections.
“Hear how he’s fighting for Floridians on everything from No Tax on Tips to No Tax on Social Security, putting seniors and workers first,” the Florida GOP stated on X in an announcement previewing the event.
The president also hit a key deadline on Friday, as May 1st marked the 60-day deadline under the War Powers Act, requiring the president to choose between a troop withdrawal and conflict wind-down versus seeking congressional authorization to declare a formal war in the Middle East.
It’s unclear if the president will address the war during his speech in Florida, or if he will keep the focus on the U.S. economy.
