The Pentagon has reportedly accelerated its planning for potential military operations in Cuba, according to several news reports surfacing Wednesday. The development follows recent statements from President Donald Trump regarding the island’s deteriorating humanitarian and economic situation.
According to a report from USA Today, citing anonymous sources familiar with the matter, the Department of Defense has issued directives to prepare specific intervention scenarios. The planning is said to be a contingency in the event the President orders military action to address the ongoing crisis on the island, which is located just 90 miles from the Florida coast.
The report follows remarks made by President Trump on Monday, where he described Cuba as a “failing nation.” During his address, the President suggested that the United States military “may stop by Cuba” following the conclusion of military operations in Iran. He has previously used rhetoric suggesting the U.S. could “take” or “free” the island to resolve its internal instability.
Cuba is currently grappling with one of its most severe economic crises in decades.
