Israel mobilizes 60,000 reservists

Israel has approved the mobilization of 60,000 reservists as it prepares for a significant new phase in its Gaza City operation. Defense Minister Israel Katz authorized the call-up along with an extension of service for another 20,000 reservists, marking one of the largest deployments since the war began.
Military officials say the expanded effort, part of a strategy called Operation Gideon’s Chariots, will target Hamas positions inside Gaza City, particularly in areas where the group maintains tunnels and fortified strongholds.
The move signals that Israel is preparing for a broader ground offensive aimed at dismantling Hamas’s remaining infrastructure and pressuring the group to release hostages. Analysts note that the size of the call-up suggests Israel is readying for sustained urban combat, which could be one of the most challenging phases of the conflict.
Inside Israel, protests have mounted over the war’s toll and the government’s handling of negotiations. With tensions high, the mobilization marks a turning point in what could become a prolonged battle. Military leaders say the additional forces will provide the strength and flexibility needed to carry out complex operations in the days ahead.
