Ken Paxton announces Texas Children’s Hospital “detransition clinic” in historic settlement

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced a historic settlement yesterday with Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. The agreement requires the medical facility to establish the first multidisciplinary detransition clinic in the United States. This settlement follows a multiyear investigation into the hospital’s practices regarding gender transition procedures for minors.
The new clinic will provide medical services specifically for patients seeking to reverse the effects of gender transition treatments. Under the terms of the settlement, Texas Children’s Hospital will fund all services at the clinic for the first five years. This arrangement ensures that the medical care will be provided to patients at no cost during the initial period of operation.
In addition to the creation of the clinic, the hospital has agreed to pay 10 million dollars to the state. This payment addresses allegations that the hospital billed Texas Medicaid for illegal gender transition interventions by using false diagnosis codes.
The Attorney General stated that the settlement was reached in coordination with the United States Department of Justice.
The agreement also mandates significant changes to hospital staffing and internal policy. Five physicians who performed transition procedures will have their medical privileges revoked and are permanently barred from working for the institution. Texas Children’s Hospital must also amend its internal bylaws to ensure that any physician who violates the state prohibition on medical interventions for transitioning children will face an automatic loss of privileges.
Paxton described the settlement as a monumental step in the effort to protect children from radical medical interventions. He noted that the detransition clinic will offer a path for individuals who were harmed by ideologically motivated medical decisions. This development aligns with the enforcement of Senate Bill 14, which was signed into law in 2023 to ban puberty blockers and hormone therapies for minors in Texas.
