Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey celebrates a memorial day not worth celebrating

The definition of Memorial Day is not a matter of political interpretation. For over a century, this day has held a sacred, singular purpose: to honor and remember the brave service members who laid down their lives for the United States. It is a solemn occasion meant for reflection on ultimate sacrifice, military service, and country.
Yet, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and several other prominent Democrats chose this weekend to rewrite the fabric of the holiday. In public statements marking the occasion, Frey completely omitted the men and women who died in uniform. Instead, he dedicated his message entirely to George Floyd, a man whose drug-fueled arrest and subsequent death became the catalyst for widespread rioting and destruction across American cities.

The decision to use a day reserved for fallen soldiers to commemorate George Floyd is a profound insult to military families. Frey’s mind-boggling decision reveals his aggressive desire to turn a unifying national day of mourning.
Memorial Day belongs to the patriots who died on the battlefields of Normandy, Gettysburg, and the mountains of Afghanistan. The hijacking of this specific holiday for local political posturing is a stunning and complete disregard for national tradition. It is shameful behavior from elected officials who are supposed to represent all citizens, including the veterans who sacrificed everything to secure the very freedoms these politicians now abuse.
