President Donald Trump has once again brought foreign countries to peace, working quickly to broker a ceasefire agreement in the deadly conflict between Cambodia and Thailand.
“I am pleased to announce that, after the involvement of President Donald J. Trump, both Countries have reached a CEASEFIRE and PEACE,” the president wrote Monday morning.
This comes after an ongoing border conflict between the two countries escalated rapidly over the past few weeks, resulting in the displacement of around 200,000 people in the region and the declaration of martial law in some Thai provinces, according to the Council on Foreign Relations.
Upon the dramatic intensification of the conflict, President Trump on Saturday released a public statement on Truth Social, pressuring both nations to cease hostilities or lose their chance to trade with the United States.
“Both Parties are looking for an immediate Ceasefire and Peace. They are also looking to get back to the ‘Trading Table’ with the United States, which we think is inappropriate to do until such time as the fighting STOPS,” he wrote.
Trump also said that he “looked forward” to concluding trade agreements with both nations upon a resolution of the conflict, after the leaders met to negotiate.
Upon the announcement of a ceasefire on Monday, Trump highlighted the importance of the deal. “By ending this War, we have saved thousands of lives. I have instructed my Trade Team to restart negotiations on Trade. I have now ended many Wars in just six months — I am proud to be the President of PEACE!” he wrote.
The president also discussed his propensity for brokering peace during his visit to Turnberry, Scotland, where he just sealed a massive trade deal with the European Union.
“If I wasn’t around, you’d have, right now, six major wars going on,” he told reporters. “India would be fighting with Pakistan. You see what we just did yesterday with two nations that we’re trading with…we have many hotspots that were at war.”
According to the White House, President Trump has also led the way in brokering peace between Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, and Rwanda and the Republic of the Congo during this second term.
