A federal judge has handed a significant victory to the White House by declining to halt President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at strengthening the integrity of mail-in ballots.
In a ruling released Thursday, U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols rejected a request from Democratic committees and civil rights groups for a preliminary injunction. The plaintiffs had sought to immediately freeze the directive, arguing it exceeded presidential authority. However, Judge Nichols ruled that the legal challenge was premature, clearing a path for the administration to advance its election security measures ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.
The executive order, titled “Ensuring Citizenship Verification and Integrity in Federal Elections,” was signed by President Trump on March 31. It aims to prevent misconduct and reinforce public trust in the electoral process by leveraging federal resources to verify voter eligibility.
Under the directive, the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration are tasked with collaborating to compile “State Citizenship Lists” of adult U.S. citizens. These verified lists will be shared with state election officials to ensure that only eligible citizens participate in federal elections.
Additionally, the order directs the U.S. Postal Service to initiate a rulemaking process. The goal is to establish a system where mail-in and absentee ballots are delivered strictly to individuals appearing on approved voter lists provided by the states.
