Republican Senator Ted Crux (Texas) is reportedly considering a run for president in 2028, setting the stage for what could be quite the battle for the Republican presidential nomination in just a few years.
According to a report from Axios, the senator seems to have his sights set on higher-profile politics as he continues to pick political fights with independent journalist Tucker Carlson and solidify himself as a staunch pro-Israel figure.
Per the outlet, Sen. Cruz is reportedly poised to address the Jewish Federations of North America’s General Assembly this week, digging in deep with pro-Israel donors amid a tumultuous time for the GOP, as Republicans continue to split on the issue of foreign policy.
And while Cruz has not officially confirmed or denied any plans to run for president in 2028, executive aspirations would not be out of the norm for him.
In 2016, he was the Republican frontrunner for the nomination. He even won the Iowa caucuses in 2016, beating out then-candidate Donald J. Trump. His victory was short-lived, however.
Just a few months later, Cruz was forced to drop out of the race as Trump rocketed upward in popularity with Republican voters, thus forcing Cruz to back down from the fight for the nomination that year.
Whether Cruz will actually run in 2028 remains to be seen. The competition will likely be stiff: most Republicans consider Vice President J.D. Vance the heir apparent to the Executive Office.
On this issue, Turning Point COO Tyler Bowyer wrote on X, “The Biggest Singular Professional Goal that Charlie Kirk had was to ensure we get JD Vance elected in 2028. Every decision and priority comes from that goal. He would be all over anyone trying to derail or fracture support for that objective.”
As for the vice president, he hasn’t confirmed whether he intends to seek the presidential nomination in 2028.
“Here’s why the presidential 2028 focus is bad,” VP Vance told Fox News last week. “If you wake up in my job, or anybody else’s job, asking yourself, ‘What’s good for my future a few years down the road?’ You’re not going to do a good job right now. The question that I try to ask myself is, ‘What is good for the president, the administration, the American people RIGHT NOW?’”
He added, “That’s what I have to be focused on, and I think so long as I do that, again, politics will take care of itself.”
