Records indicate exorbitant amount of ineligible voters on North Carolina rolls

The North Carolina State Board of Elections responded to a public records request by releasing 11,398 pages of documentation covering more than one million inactive voters across the state.
The released records reveal that North Carolina’s voter rolls currently contain ineligible voter entries dating as far back as 1987. Based on the findings, potentially more than 491,000 ineligible voters have been identified on the state rolls.
Under federal law, specifically the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, the removal of these ineligible voters from state voter rolls is legally mandated. A formal statutory notice of violation regarding these voter registration list maintenance deficiencies was submitted via electronic mail to the North Carolina State Board of Elections on June 16, 2025.
Maintaining outdated or ineligible registrations weakens public confidence in election outcomes and creates administrative burdens for local precincts. It is far past time for North Carolina to take care of this issue.
