Ted Turner, the visionary media tycoon who revolutionized the television industry by founding CNN, has died at the age of 87. He passed away peacefully on Wednesday at his estate in Lamont, Florida, surrounded by his family. Turner Enterprises confirmed his death, noting that he had been living with dementia for several years, a condition he first disclosed in 2018.
Known as the pioneer of the 24-hour news cycle, Turner launched the Cable News Network in 1980. Despite initial skepticism from industry experts who doubted the viability of round-the-clock reporting, he successfully shifted the way the world consumes information. His media empire eventually grew to include major networks like TBS, TNT, and Cartoon Network. He also left a significant mark on professional sports as the owner of the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Hawks.
Beyond his business achievements, Turner was a dedicated philanthropist and environmentalist. He famously pledged one billion dollars to the United Nations and became one of the largest private landowners in the United States. His commitment to wildlife conservation and land preservation was a defining feature of his later life.
Public figures from across the political spectrum have shared tributes following the news. President Donald Trump described Turner as one of the greats of broadcast history and a personal friend who was always willing to fight for a cause. Mark Thompson, the chair of CNN Worldwide, called him an intrepid and fearless leader who will always be the presiding spirit of the network.
