The war may be winding down, thanks to President Trump’s efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz, and as the key shipping channel is reportedly beginning to reopen, the terms of a simple but effective deal with Iran may be on the table.
According to a report from Axios, the U.S. and Iran are currently negotiating over a three-page plan that could permanently end the war. While President Trump has repeatedly stipulated that the Strait of Hormuz must be reopened to facilitate a conclusion to this conflict, Axios suggested that there may be another sticking point: the release of a reported $20 billion in frozen funds, to be exchanged for Iran’s promise to stop enriching uranium.
Since the circulation of this report, President Trump has suggested that he won’t release the funds to Iran, despite media speculation.
A second round of peace talks may take place this weekend, again in Islamabad. With just days to go on the ceasefire, the stakes have never been higher.
The uranium, deep underground, is sometimes referred to as the “nuclear dust.” While Israel has expressed some interest in removing that material itself, President Trump said on Friday that the United States alone would do so.
“The U.S.A. will get all Nuclear ‘Dust,’ created by our great B2 Bombers – No money will exchange hands in any way, shape, or form,” the president clarified.
He added, “This deal is in no way subject to Lebanon, either, but the USA will, separately, work with Lebanon, and deal with the Hezboolah situation in an appropriate manner. Israel will not be bombing Lebanon any longer. They are PROHIBITED from doing so by the U.S.A. Enough is enough!!!”
According to Axios, Iran has reportedly stockpiled around 2,000kg of enriched uranium in deep underground facilities. The president is suggesting that the United States military will remove this nuclear material itself to keep it out of Iranian hands.
In a follow-up report, President Trump told the outlet Friday that he expects a final deal with Iran “in the next day or two.”
