Vice President J.D. Vance slammed the violence that unfolded over the weekend in Cincinnati, Ohio, resulting in the alleged beating of two individuals in what appeared to be a street fight.
“I hope every single one of those people who engaged in violence will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” he said during a factory visit in Canton.
It’s unclear what sparked the violence on Friday, but according to Fox News, law enforcement has identified several suspects linked to the incident, which left one man and one woman beaten.
The gruesome footage of the incident has been circulating on social media for several days and has gained national attention.
“You had a grown man who sucked punched a middle-aged woman…that person ought to go to jail for a very long time, and frankly, he’s lucky there weren’t some better people around because they would have handled it themselves,” the vice president added.
Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon said on Sunday that her division would “monitor closely how local authorities handle this attack,” suggesting that it could be racially motivated, although the reason for the fight is still unclear.
“Nobody in our great nation should be the victim of such a crime, and where race is a motivation, federal law may apply,” she wrote on X.
Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno (R) also condemned Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval for failing to release a timely statement addressing the violence on Friday.
“The Mayor of Cincinnati, @AftabPureval, who has an opinion on lots of irrelevant topics, has not issued a statement, let alone a condemnation, of this heinous attack. Instead of dreaming about higher office, which will never happen, he should be ensuring his residents are safe,” Moreno wrote on X.
Pureval, a Democrat, released a statement on Monday calling the incident “horrifying and unacceptable.”
In his comments this week, Vance discussed the chilling reality of street violence in America and presented a possible solution.
“You shouldn’t be worried about street violence,” Vance continued. “And the only way to destroy that street violence is to take the thugs who engaged in that violence and throw their asses in prison.”
Vance highlighted the importance of making American cities “safe again,” emphasizing the need to prosecute individuals who commit violent crimes.
