Trump administration reigns supreme on gas prices for the holidays

As Americans head into the home stretch before Christmas Day, the Trump administration’s hard work to bring down Biden-era energy prices is paying off.
According to GasBuddy, the nationwide average cost per gallon of gas has fallen to $2.85, signaling a significant drop from the same time of year in 2021, during the Biden administration.
This marks the lowest prices on fuel since March 2021, and represents a big economic win for President Donald Trump’s energy-forward policies.
The highest recorded average price of fuel occurred during Biden’s term, when gas prices peaked at an average of $5.03 per gallon in June 2022.
According to GasBuddy’s data, the newest lower average – which has remained largely steady at under $3 per gallon – is down another 22 cents from last month.
“Just ahead of Christmas, the national average stands at its lowest level since March 12, 2021, delivering weekly savings of nearly $400 million compared to this time last year,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
He continued, “Gas prices are now lower in a majority of states, and the good news is that the downward trend may continue into the closing innings of 2025, with further declines likely across much of the country. That’s being driven by refineries wrapping up maintenance and boosting output to near summer highs, increasing fuel supply, while additional oil production from OPEC has pressured crude prices lower as well.”
The states with the lowest fuel averages are Oklahoma ($2.22), Colorado ($2.39), and Texas ($2.41). The states with the highest fuel prices, perhaps unsurprisingly, are Hawaii ($4.36), California ($4.31), and Washington ($3.95).
In the last week alone, gas prices have fallen 4.5 cents, and diesel prices have dropped 5.3 cents, at a new average of $3.61 per gallon.
