President Donald Trump said Monday that he was “very unhappy” with Russia’s behavior lately amid its war with Ukraine, issuing a stern warning about potential consequences to come if a peace deal is not achieved in the next 50 days.
“We are very unhappy – I am – with Russia…and we’re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don’t have a deal in 50 days. Tariffs at about 100 percent, you call them secondary tariffs,” Trump said during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Trump expanded on his comments to the press, noting that the United States had contributed billions of dollars to the Ukrainian war effort under Joe Biden.
Trump remarked, “We’d like to see it end – it wasn’t my war, it was Biden’s war…I’m trying to get you out of it. We want to see it end, and I’m disappointed in President Putin, because I thought we would have had a deal two months ago.”
He again doubled down on “100 percent” secondary tariffs if a deal is not achieved soon, commenting, “That’s just the way it is. It couldn’t be more simple…I hope we don’t have to do it.”
This new warning comes amid President Trump’s decision to send military aid to Ukraine. However, Trump said the European Union would be footing the bill, not the United States. On Sunday, he reiterated his message that he was “disappointed” in Putin, accusing him of making empty promises.
“I thought he was somebody that meant what he said…he’ll talk so beautifully and then he’ll bomb people at night – we don’t like that,” Trump remarked at Joint Base Andrews.
On Monday, he explained in further detail. “Just so you know, [Europe] is paying for everything. We’re not paying anymore…Biden should’ve done this years ago.”
