UAE reports Iranian attacks, possible shots fired between U.S. and Iranian vessels
A barely-there ceasefire in the Middle East continues to hold even as President Trump has launched Project Freedom, a naval operation, to attempt to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Conflicting reports have caused confusion and anxiety in the region.

The United States Central Command has denied that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps struck a U.S. warship over the weekend
“No U.S. Navy ships have been struck,” CENTCOM said, refuting Iranian state media reporting. “U.S. forces are supporting Project Freedom and enforcing the naval blockade on Iranian ports.”
On Sunday, President Trump ordered the naval operation, which aims to escort vessels through the Strait to free up marine traffic. He described it as a “Humanitarian gesture on behalf of the United States, Middle Eastern Countries but, in particular, the Country of Iran.”
This also comes on the heels of the president’s announcement that he was currently reviewing a peace plan offer from Iran this past weekend. I will soon be reviewing the plan that Iran has just sent to us, but can’t imagine that it would be acceptable in that they have not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done to Humanity, and the World, over the last 47 years,” he noted on Truth Social.
According to the Associated Press, the United Arab Emirates reported that Iran launched four cruise missiles on Monday, marking the first instance of an Iranian attack against the region since the early-April ceasefire. Another attack, this one via drone, reportedly targeted an oil facility, wounded three Indian nationals, and potentially sparked two cargo vessel fires.
Project Freedom in the Strait of Hormuz has deployed more than 100 land and sea-based aircraft and 15,000 U.S. servicemembers, according to CENTCOM.
Iran claims that the U.S. operation violates the ceasefire between the two nations, teeing up more potential conflicts in the area. Geopolitical analyst and author Brandon Weichert observed on X, “I suspect that a US Navy ship was, indeed, hit and the Pentagon is playing wordsmith because they are attempting to avoid escalation. We have exhausted all military options.”
Weichert’s guess may be correct. On Monday morning, reporter Dan Lamothe said that in a phone call with reporters, Central Command Adm. Brad Cooper said Iran had opened fire on U.S. warships and non-military vessels in the region.
“U.S. forces returned fire and destroyed some Iranian small boats,” Lamothe reported. “Multiple U.S. destroyers are presently in the Arabian Gulf, Adm. Cooper says.”
