President Donald Trump’s administration appears to be eyeing an expansion of its already hard push toward artificial intelligence development by boosting the technological evolution of robotics.
According to Politico, the Department of Commerce, headed by Secretary Howard Lutnick, is “committed” to robotics and manufacturing, and the Department of Transportation may soon be preparing to announce a “robotics working group” before the end of the year.
This comes amid several initiatives and executive orders from President Trump on the front of AI development. In late November, he ordered the launch of the “Genesis Mission,” a direct response to the earlier “America’s AI Action Plan,” which aims to boost artificial intelligence and scientific discovery.
“In this pivotal moment, the challenges we face require a historic national effort, comparable in urgency and ambition to the Manhattan Project that was instrumental to our victory in World War II and was a critical basis for the foundation of the Department of Energy (DOE) and its national laboratories,” the president wrote in his order.
In January, the president kicked off the administration’s AI push with an EO related to “Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence” in the pursuit of global AI leadership.
Per Politico, a past legislative amendment in the National Defense Authorization Act “would have created a national robotics commission,” but was ultimately not included in the final bill. However, interest remains, and there may be more movement on this in the future on the Republican side.
Currently, there is a host of humanoid robotics models across the globe, built by companies like BMW/OpenAI, Tesla Optimus, and Boston Dynamics’ Atlas.
