President Trump levies tariffs on India
News | By Easton Martin July 30, 2025
President Trump announced on July 30 that the United States will impose a 25 percent tariff on a range of imports from India. The decision comes in response to India’s continued purchases of Russian oil, which U.S. officials say undermine sanctions placed on Moscow.
The tariffs will cover billions of dollars in Indian goods, including steel, textiles, and certain technology products.
The administration stated that the move is intended to pressure New Delhi to reduce its reliance on Russian energy while also addressing what the White House described as longstanding trade imbalances between the two countries.
In a statement, the U.S. Trade Representative’s office said the penalties are aimed at protecting American industries and ensuring fair competition.
Officials emphasized that India’s alignment with Russia has complicated international efforts to isolate Moscow over its war in Ukraine.
Indian officials have not yet announced countermeasures but signaled they are reviewing options.
