Where does the fight for ACA subsidies stand?
By Easton Martin | December 17, 2025
The fight over Affordable Care Act premium subsidies escalated today as House Republicans declined to extend the enhanced tax credits that are set to expire at the end of the year, putting millions of Americans at risk of higher health insurance costs.
The House narrowly passed a Republican backed health care package that did not include an extension of the expanded subsidies, despite pressure from moderates in both parties. Those subsidies, first expanded during the pandemic, have significantly lowered monthly premiums for middle income families and boosted enrollment in ACA plans.
In response, a group of moderate House Republicans joined Democrats to advance a discharge petition that would force a standalone vote on extending the subsidies for three years. The petition reached the required number of signatures today, marking a major procedural breakthrough for supporters. However, the vote cannot occur until lawmakers return from the holiday recess in January.
Democratic leaders say that allowing the subsidies to lapse would lead to sharp premium increases and coverage losses early next year. Republican leadership says any extension should be paired with broader health care reforms and cost controls.
With the Senate divided and the clock ticking, the fate of the ACA subsidies now rests on early 2026 negotiations.
