The White House has launched a significant new initiative aimed at encouraging and challenging Americans to pray for their country as the nation prepares to celebrate its historic 250th birthday next year.
“We’ve invited America’s great faith communities to pray for our nation, for our people, and for peace in the world, and it’s going to be an amazing time,” President Donald Trump said during remarks on Monday delivered at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C.
“America has always been a nation that believes in the power of prayer,” the president continued. “And we will never apologize for our faith – ever…we will never surrender our God-given rights, we will defend our liberties, our values, or sovereignty, and we will defend our freedom.”
During his speech to the Religious Liberty Commission, the president invited Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Scott Turner onstage to announce the launch of “America Prays,” a collaboration with 70 faith organizations and churches that aims to encourage and challenge citizens to turn to God and pray for the country.
“What if one million people pray for our country every single week between now and next July 4? More specifically, what if believers all across this great nation got together with ten people…to pray for our country and for our fellow citizens?” Turner said.
“Think about the miracles that would take place over the next year,” he continued. “…Think about the transformation that you and I could witness in communities all across the land.”
According to the White House website, “America Prays” is an open invitation to prayer and the rededication of the United States of America as “One Nation Under God” in a nationwide effort to align the nation’s heart and soul with the Almighty before July 4, 2026.
From “America Prays”:
“As we celebrate 250 years of freedom, this is an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the principles that gave birth to this land of liberty. As George Washington famously said in his Farewell Address, ‘Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.’”
The website challenges Americans to find ten people to pray with every week. It also challenges citizens to listen to sermons and historic prayers, and to pray specifically for issues or people in their communities.
The official page for this initiative includes a downloadable packet of prayers and proclamations from throughout American history, like President Abraham Lincoln’s call to fast and pray in 1863 and the remarks at Cape Henry Landing in Virginia in 1607, when Rev. Robert Hunt delivered remarks dedicating the land to God.
