Utah officials have arrested a suspect whom they believe to be the alleged killer of Charlie Kirk, ending a two-day manhunt for the assassin who took the life of the 31-year-old Turning Point USA founder.
During a press conference on Friday morning, Utah Governor Spencer Cox (R) joined law enforcement officials for a press conference and announced, “We got him.”
Robinson stated that on the evening of September 11, a family member of the suspect, identified as Tyler Robinson, “reached out to a family friend who contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office with information that Robinson had confessed to them or implied that he had committed the incident.”
Investigators reviewed video footage of Robinson allegedly on campus at Utah Valley University, where Kirk was shot on Wednesday. They observed on video a Gray Dodge Challenger, which purportedly belongs to the suspect, pull up to the area in the morning.
Those who know Robinson say that he had “become more political over the years” and recalled an incident “in which Robinson came to dinner and in the conversation” noted that Charlie Kirk was coming to UVU.
Gov. Cox said that investigators were able to identify and make contact with an individual who was identified as Robinson’s roommate. This roommate showed Discord messages between unidentified person(s) and the suspect, in which the suspect discussed “a need to retrieve a rifle from a drop point, leaving a rifle in a bush…to visually watching an area where the rifle was left.”
Shortly after the incident on Wednesday, law enforcement officials found a rifle in a wooded area. It appears that this is the rifle referred to by the alleged suspect in these messages.
The unfired casings, the governor said, were engraved with hateful rhetoric, including “Hey, Fascist,””If You Read This, You Are Gay,” and “Catch!”
FBI Director Kash Patel, during the press conference, also delivered comments.
“This is what happens when you let good cops be cops – the FBI and our partners are proud to stand here together to bring justice to the family of Charlie Kirk and honor his memory,” Patel said.
