Federal officials unsealed a criminal indictment on Tuesday regarding the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The charges are a significant step forward in the effort to hold foreign actors responsible for the maritime disaster that paralyzed a critical American shipping hub over two years ago.
The indictment targets the Singaporean operators Synergy Marine Private Limited and Synergy Maritime Private Limited along with their technical superintendent. Radhakrishnan Karthik Nair, an Indian national, faces serious criminal allegations including conspiracy to defraud the United States. He is also charged with obstruction and misconduct resulting in death.
Federal prosecutors allege that the defendants engaged in dangerous technical negligence. The government claims the company improperly altered flushing pumps on the Dali container ship to redirect fuel to generators. This specific modification reportedly triggered a second total blackout after the vessel initially lost power from a loose wire.
These findings suggest that the disaster was not merely an accident but the result of reckless mechanical interference. By pursuing these charges, federal authorities are signaling that foreign companies operating in American waters must be held to the highest standards of safety and truthfulness. The case now moves toward a trial where the defendants will answer for their role in the destruction of vital U.S. infrastructure.
