Israel launches major ground offensive in Gaza
News | By Easton Martin | September 17, 2025
Israel has launched a major ground offensive into Gaza City, escalating its military campaign after weeks of aerial bombardments and repeated evacuation orders. The Israel Defense Forces say the operation is aimed at dismantling Hamas infrastructure and securing the release of hostages.
Palestinian health officials report that dozens of people have been killed in recent strikes, including civilians. Thousands more have been wounded as fighting pushes deeper into urban areas.
Tens of thousands of residents are fleeing northern Gaza, many using the coastal road to move south. Families have been seen carrying belongings by hand, on carts, and in crowded vehicles. The United Nations estimates that hundreds of thousands may still remain in the north despite evacuation orders.
Humanitarian conditions continue to deteriorate. Food and fuel supplies in northern Gaza are running critically low after crossings were closed. Hospitals are under extreme pressure, with limited medical supplies, damaged infrastructure, and a constant influx of casualties. Aid agencies warn that access to those most in need remains heavily restricted.
Israeli officials say they are allowing aid into northern Gaza, but humanitarian groups report that deliveries have not resumed at sufficient levels to meet demand. Meanwhile, international bodies have issued reports raising concerns about civilian harm, displacement, and deprivation. Israel has rejected those allegations, maintaining that its operations are focused on Hamas targets.
The ground campaign is expected to continue in the coming days, with heavy fighting anticipated in Gaza City.
