Why did President Trump reclassify Marijuana?

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order reclassifying marijuana under the federal Controlled Substances Act, moving it from Schedule I to Schedule III. Schedule I previously placed marijuana alongside heroin and LSD, labeling it as having no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. The change removes federal barriers to medical research and allows cannabis businesses to access standard tax deductions and banking services.
Recreational marijuana remains illegal at the federal level, but the reclassification treats marijuana more like other regulated therapeutic substances. Federal agencies are directed to implement rules that expand research opportunities and clarify regulatory guidelines for the industry.
The decision, in the eyes of the administration, reflects several practical considerations.. Researchers will have greater freedom to study marijuana’s potential benefits for pain management, seizures, and other medical conditions. Businesses that operate legally under state law will see financial and regulatory relief, including better access to banking and tax benefits. The executive order also positions the administration to manage federal policy on marijuana without changing state-level legalization or enforcement.
This reclassification is the most significant federal adjustment to marijuana policy in decades, creating new opportunities for research, public health, and the legal cannabis market.
