Amid reports that the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, no longer exists, an Office of Personnel Management (OPM) official has spoken out to clarify the record.
OPM Director Scott Kupor, on the heels of an exclusive interview with Reuters, said that DOGE may not exist as a singular department with “centralized leadership,” but its principles would continue.
“Good editing by @reuters – spliced my full comments across paragraphs 2/3 to create a grabbing headline,” Kupor stated on X.
In the original Reuters article, Kupor was quoted as saying, “[DOGE] doesn’t exist,” when asked about the department, which was previously headed up by Tesla and SpaceX visionary Elon Musk.
He also told the outlet that DOGE was no longer “centralized.”
However, following the publication of the article, Kupor lent more clarity. He stated, “…The truth is: DOGE may not have centralized leadership under @USDS. But, the principles of DOGE remain alive and well: de-regulation; eliminating fraud, waste and abuse; re-shaping the federal workforce; making efficiency a first-class citizen; etc.”
Kupor said that OPM and the Office of Management and Budget would continue to institutionalize the changes implemented by DOGE.
While it lasted, DOGE focused on unveiling massive amounts of alleged waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal government apparatus.
The short-lived agency was a major part of President Donald Trump’s campaign, and the brainchild of Musk during his involvement in the Trump political platform last year.
The official DOGE website, as of November 2025, claims to have saved America around $214 billion with its cuts and contract terminations across many federal agencies. This amounts to $1,329.19 per taxpayer.
The website cites the termination of more than 13,000 government contracts, representing $61 billion in savings in just that single area. Originally, DOGE was projected to save America more than $1 trillion; however, due to Musk’s departure from the Trump administration and the subsequent shuttering of the department, that goal was unfortunately not met.
