President Donald Trump has agreed to travel to China next year, marking a big development in the relations between the U.S. and the powerful Asian nation.
“I just completed a very productive call with President Xi of China,” President Trump announced on Truth Social.
He continued, “We made progress on many very important issues including Trade, Fentanyl, the need to bring the War between Russia and Ukraine to an end, and the approval of the TikTok Deal.”
The president said that he and President Xi Jinping agreed to meet at the upcoming APEC summit in South Korea, and added that he would “go to China in the early part of next year, and that President Xi would, likewise, come to the United States at an appropriate time.”
The APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit is scheduled for October 31-November 1.
“The call was a very good one, we will be speaking again by phone, appreciate the TikTok approval, and both look forward to meeting at APEC!” President Trump concluded in his statement.
The president’s 2026 trip to China is a meaningful one. It will mark the second time that he has traveled to China. During his first term, he and First Lady Melania Trump traveled to Beijing to meet with President Xi.
While there, President Trump was granted a high honor never bestowed on any American president: the opportunity to dine with President Xi in the Forbidden City. In fact, President Trump was the first foreign leader to do so since the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
Likewise, a potential U.S. visit from President Xi will not be the first time the Chinese leader has set foot on American soil. In November 2023, he attended the APEC summit and met with then-President Joe Biden.
Preceding that visit, President Xi also met with President Donald Trump during his first term in Florida, at the president’s personal home, Mar-a-Lago, in West Palm Beach.
