President Donald Trump said on Friday morning that the suspected killer of Charlie Kirk had been identified with the help of a minister and, perhaps, the suspect’s alleged father.
Kirk, 31, was tragically assassinated on Wednesday at Utah Valley University while discussing political ideas with college students. After the shooting, law enforcement began a massive manhunt to locate the suspected assassin, who fled the scene after the crime.
“Somebody that was very close to him turned him in. And that happens when you had some of those good shots,” the president said during an interview on Fox News.
On Thursday, the FBI released photos and footage of a “person of interest” linked to the fatal shooting, asking the public for help in identifying him.
President Trump alluded to an upcoming announcement that would provide more information about how the suspect was apprehended.
“It was a minister, and the minister went to a friend,” he said. “…Then it was a father [who] got involved, namely his father, and said, ‘We’ve got to go in.’”
The president said the situation was subject to “change” by the FBI, but noted that the “friend” this father went to was a U.S. Marshal. The two allegedly drove to police headquarters. The president said, “He’s there now.”
It is unclear if the suspect has been arrested at the time of this report or if he has just been identified, but some outlets are reporting that a suspect is indeed in custody.
According to Fox News, the suspect’s alleged name may be Tyler Robinson.
Other outlets began reporting early Friday morning that Robinson, 22, had been taken into custody for the assassination of Charlie Kirk, after being turned in by his father.”
Charlie Kirk was the president and founder of Turning Point USA. He was a political leader and a debater of ideas, and an encourager of peaceful civic discourse.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is available.
